In 1985, after the founder's two high-school-age sons left their small moving business behind to attend college. When calls kept coming in for moving services, she took over the business and began franchising in 1989. 

The Michigan-based company is still family-owned and privately held, and has more than 80 locations across the United States.

It began franchising in 1986, the same year that the IRS introduced electronic filing. A subsidiary of Cendant Corp., Jackson Hewitt has locations in Wal-Mart and K-Mart stores.
